Honouring Truth & Reconciliation

Honouring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

In honour of September 30th, Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Board and staff of BC Speed Skating would like to take this opportunity to recognize the rich Indigenous history of British Columbia and to state our commitment to the role of sport in Reconciliation.

Over the next two years as part of our strategic plan, BC Speed Skating will be embarking on an educational awareness program for our volunteer Boards and administrators.  We look to understand more about Indigenous people and listen to Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community members and to grow and use that shared knowledge to create a sport experience that is welcoming to all.  We are proud of our past and present Indigenous athletes who have competed for British Columbia on the local, Provincial, National and International stage.

We encourage all our members to wear orange on September 30th in support of Orange Shirt Day to honour the children who survived residential school and those who did not and invite everyone within sport to make a personal and/or organizational commitment to reconciliation.
