Welcome Alison!

Welcome Alison!

When Alison Desmarais isn’t baking up a batch of cookies (her real motivation), she’s training at the Calgary Olympic Oval in pursuit of her speed skating dreams.  Alison recently raced World Cups as a member of the Canadian Short Track National Team and now training to compete in long track. Alison was first drawn to the overall speed skating community and opportunity to pursue excellence, “as an athlete, and a person, I am motivated by the pursuit of excellence and find pushing my limits more enjoyable when I am part of a supportive group of people.”

Having recently completed a BSc in Exercise and Health Physiology at the University of Calgary, Alison is “fascinated by exercise physiology (how active living benefits the body & mind).”  The timing worked out perfectly, as Alison joins the BC Speed Skating Integrated Support Team as Strength and Conditioning Coach,

Although I've been skating for 16 years, it's a different experience being on the other side and I have already learned so much. The biggest thing I've learned so far is how much goes into planning a strength & conditioning program that is structured, science based, and suitable/effective for a wide range of individuals. I respect my coaches on a whole new level!

Watch for Alison’s programs, expertise, and support in various BC Speed Skating programming such as Academy and GenBC.  Alison is ready for the challenge to “help the next generation of athletes gain skills and confidence that transfer beyond speed skating.”
